Frequently Asked Questions

(No title)

Q: What is the legal age for being tattooed?
In the state of California (and virtually all others) you must be at least 18 years of age. Even with parental consent, tattooing of minors is illegal. No exceptions! Please bring proper state provided ID, as you may be carded!

Q: Do you use new needles? Can you describe your practices in regard to cleanliness?
Yes. All of our needles are single-use and are properly sterilized prior to each session. Each used needle is considered contaminated and is disposed of in state-mandated sharps containers. All tattoo equipment spends sterile time in a hospital-grade autoclave, which kills all microbes.
Very careful attention to cleanliness is spent throughout the tattooing process by Paul, exceeding industry standards. Infection and transmission of disease is never taken lightly and specific questions related to the process can best be addressed during each client's session.

Q: Do you take walk-ins?
No. Since this is a private tattoo studio and there is no direct street access, you will need to consult Paul in advance, via email. Then, you can set up a proper consultation to better discuss things. Also, it allows you some time to gather ideas so that you arrive informed.

Q: How do I set up an appointment?
Begin with the appointment feature on this site. It will connect you directly to Paul via email/phone. Paul will return your message and the two of you can hammer out a time and date convenient for both of you. It is recommended that you read Paul's policies on deposits and keeping appointments prior to the consultation.

Q: Is my deposit refundable?
No, deposits are not refundable. Simply put, your deposit will go towards the rendering of artwork and/or actual tattoo time. Deposits show a committment by the client that they are serious in their consideration to be tattooed. So, deposits also are used to hold your place in Paul's busy schedule. So please make sure that you are serious about your tattoo before making an appointment. If you need to reschedule please give as much notice as possible (at least 48 hours), calling Paul directly and your deposit may be applied to the new time slot.

Q: How much will my tattoo cost?
This is the most commonly asked and most difficult question to answer. At Gifted Spider, we feel that value is more attached to the quality of the finished piece than to the dollar amount. With 20 years of experience comes an ability for the artist to work at a faster rate, which benefits our clients who essentially pay by the hour. We charge an hourly rate of $150/hour. That is actual tattoo time. Separate charges for the rendering of the artwork will best be explained during your custom consultation.
The shop minimum is $100.

Q: Is there privacy available?
Since Paul's studio isn't flooded with street traffic or other tattooists, each and every client enjoys full privacy at all times.

Q: Can a tattoo be covered or removed?
Please view the "Cover-ups" section on Paul's "Tattoos" page. He has vast experience in the art of covering old work, recently stating that it may be one aspect of the artform that he has mastered. Color theory and use of specific line technique seems to be most effective. There are limitations, of course, but Paul has hidden some substantial old works using such methods. All of this can be discussed during the consultation.

Q: What forms of payment do you accept?
We prefer cash, of course. However, we currently accept the following major credit cards: Visa, Mastercard & Discover.

Q: Should I tip my tattoo artist?
Tipping is never expected, but surely appreciated. We consider it a nice gesture that informs the artist the extent to which you love their work. No amount is right or wrong.
