Tattoo Care

Your new tattoo will be bandaged upon leaving your session at Gifted Spider Studio. Once you return home, wash hands thoroughly using very warm water and lathering for 25 seconds--any less and you are simply giving dangerous bacteria a spa treatment and not killing them!  Remove the bandage.

Cleaning & Sealing the tattoo: For best results, use very warm water, rinse & wash tattoo as best as possible using mild hand soap (not too perfumy) and lathering for thirty seconds before rinsing. DO NOT SCRUB! Use only your fingers. Please, no loofahs or hand towels!

If your new tattoo is in a difficult-to-reach location, we recommend a hot shower to both clean and seal the tattoo. If not, it is advised that you use a hot compress. This works best with clean, folded paper towels, applying the compress to the tattoo until the compress cools. Both methods cease the oozing of plasma, allowing the healing process to begin. Too soothe the tattoo, you may run it under cold water prior to gently patting dry with a VERY CLEAN & SOFT towel. You will not need hot water again past this point, so please note that doing so may damage the tattoo.

Put NOTHING on the tattoo for the next 24 hours!

The following morning, gently clean the tattoo using warm water, not hot!

Once a full day has passed you will need to hydrate the healing tattoo. Lotions are the best way to assist healing without bringing unneeded and possibly irritating medicines into the equation. We suggest that you keep the area well moisturized, but make sure to wash hands first. ALWAYS clean the tattoo before applying new lotion. This is very important as simply rubbing new lotion onto a tattoo that has absorbed oils and dirt throughout the day may irritate and infect.  Generally, you may need to apply lotion two or three times a day, depending on your skin type and the current climate.

We recommend only the ORIGINAL/UNSCENTED formulas of the following brands: Curel, Eucerin and Lubriderm. If you are having a reaction to the lotion, discontinue its use immediately and call the artist for some advice. He may help you to choose another brand that is more suited to your case. Most hand lotions contain perfumes, dyes, and other additives that really aren't doing us any favors, so do your best to NOT buy the value brands. Once again, we must stress keeping everything very clean--it helps to eliminate causes for reactions.

If you are having pronounced redness, skin splitting, and pain after four or five days, it may be the sign of a surface infection and can be easily treated by pouring hydrogen peroxide on the specific tattooed area only. This will bubble and instantly remove the pain. This will dry out the affected area. Afterwards, we suggest a small amount of Bacitracin ointment be gently applied to the tattoo and then wipe clean the excess amount so that it can still breathe. We DO NOT recommend Neosporin or any of the other polysporins as they have been linked to color loss, irritation, allergic reaction, dermatitis and so forth. However, everyone is different, so find out what works best for you.

PLEASE NOTE
Generally, all tattoos undergo a similar healing process. Expect that during the first few days, light scabbing may occur as well as a generally flakiness to the inked skin. Though you may be tempted, DO NOT scratch, pick, or rub the site; allow healing to do its thing. Dead skin will fall off in time and the scabs (if there are any) will heal themselves as long as the area is kept clean and moisturized. Removing any skin before its time may result in scarring and/or color loss.

Expect that during the first few weeks, your tattoo image may appear blotted, muted, and there may even be uneven coloration. Don't worry. The color will return, things will settle down. This is all a normal part of the process, though duration and ease of healing will vary with the individual. Continue to keep the skin hydrated using the same lotion until the final stage of healing has completed.

DOs and DO NOTs
Showering is fine, but for the first two weeks, we kindly discourage submersion into bathtubs, hot tubs, swimming pools and so forth. There is simply too great a risk of infection and while this can be treated, scarring and loss of color means more time back in the chair (and more money!) to fix what could have been avoided, right!
Sunlight is the natural enemy of tattoos. This is true of both the healing process as well as for the rest of its (and your's) life. During healing though, tattoos often react violently to exposure to the sun--even after a few minutes. Keep your tattoo site fully covered and, once it is fully healed--after a month or so--please limit time in the sun and always use proper sunblock. We have all seen those beachcomber/ sunworshippers with the bluish-black blobs of long-baked tattoos.
Before slathering massive amounts of sunscreen on your healed tattoo, please try a patch-test to determine that there will be no adverse reactions.

DISCLAIMER
Though we carefully source only the best manufacturers for pigments that meet the highest standards, there is always the possibility that an individual may be affected by an allergic reaction. Sometimes this is due to the sensitivity of the individual and Gifted Spider Tattoo disclaims any responsibility for such a reaction due to the use of our chosen pigments. There are NO GUARANTEES in our tattoos. Though we strive to respect the upmost practices in sterile environments that contribute to a happy healing experience things sometimes go bad. In any event, please feel free to call directly if you suspect that you are having any healing issues--better sooner than later!

FINAL NOTE
Tattoos will continue to appear as bright and sharp and as beautiful as the wearer takes ongoing care of their skin. We have all seen the bluing blobs of chronic sunbathers on the beach and wondered what went wrong. The answer is right there--the SUN! As skin ages, so do the tattoos that we adorn. Keep sunblock/screen in your car, backpack, purse, satchel or whatnot--at all times. Even one bad sunburn can drain years of luster off the life of your tattoo.
